Please purr/purray for our Mama

This post is not for the "faint hearted"!!!!!!!!

Sweet friends, please bear with us.  Mama hasn't helped us visit much for the last couple weeks.  Word is out that our mama has been "poorly," so we want to let you know what happened.

Shelly gave mama a couple of "love bites" and they got infected and mama tried to treat them herself but they just kept on growing.

Mama has no transportation of her own and has to depend on someone else to take her to a doctor....or anywhere else, for that matter....:)   Sisterbean is in the training program for her new job so can't take ANY time off, or she will lose her job.

LaurynBean (granddaughter) can take our mama on Fridays cuz she doesn't have any classes on Friday.  Most days she not only has classes but works, so Friday is the only day.

All the rest of our family live waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy on the other side of San Antonio, and it is very difficult for them to help mama.

Shelly is a "nipper" and the first initial love bite was several weeks ago...and was a single puncture wound.....mama had tried bunches of stuff to heal it herself, but nothing seemed to work and it just kept growing!!!!!!!!!!  This is how it looked on this past Monday...........

The left side is where the initial wound was.
The doctor feels it is a "staph" infection.

The second one is more recent and has only grown to about a half an inch wide around the initial wound.

Mama has let Shelly know that nipping isn't an acceptable thing, so she does it much less now.....thankfully!!!!!!!  Do y'all remember when she remodeled Andy's ear with her nipping?????

Mama was able to email the above picture to a doctor, and he prescribed oral antibiotics and a topical antibiotic cream......and the big one is looking a bit better today.....the antibiotics were started late on Monday.

It seems to have affected mama's whole body, and she hasn't felt at all well...and believe it or not, she hasn't had ANY appetite at all!!!!!!!!  She smiles and tell us it's "terrible to get older!!!!!!!"

We are hoping to be back to our regular visiting schedule soon....in the meantime, please be praying and purring for our mama.  We love her so much and know many of y'all love her also.

xxxxxxx

Ouch! That looks pretty bad. Good thing the doctor was able to identify the problem and prescribe the meds with just the picture. I hope your Mommy feels better soon!
As for Ms Shelly, it's not nice to bite! Be good now!

I am purring lots for your human. It's too bad she wasn't able to get these looked at sooner because those nasty infections can really make you sick all over! I hope the antibiotics do the trick - make she she takes ALL her medication, you guys!!

P.S. The only kitty here who does any real biting is Binga, and my human has figured out how to work around the times she's more likely to bite, like nail clippings, etc. But yeah, Binga is also a tortie - I guess they all have attitude!

Gosh, we are concerned for you - all the different cat bite problems in the blogosphere! As others have said, keep close track of this and if the antibiotics do not seem to be working, do get to the doctor for something more broad spectrum/strong (often doctors start people out on milder antibiotics before using the "big guns".). Mom does know that cat bites can be dangerous things.

Puurrrrs!

The oral antibiotic will likely take care of it but you may need, as I did, 4 weeks of it. It took me 4 weeks and counting to quell the raging infection I had in my leg that I injured at the same time I broke my wrist, I had a condition called cellulitis which is a MRSA-like infection and scary. PLEASE take a cab..I'll help on that if need be, to a Dr. and have that diagnosed properly. This is nothing to mess with as you already know. I don't mean to sound like your mom..I'm just very concerned for you.
I didn't have a fever with my infection I was battling and it amazed me that I did not. But infection can be raging in there with no fever surprisingly. Please keep us updated. I care VERY much.

Oh Judi I'm so sorry this is a bad injury.
If this had not improved significantly by Friday you need to be seen by a doctor in person. I'm praying the antibiotics will do the trick. My Mom (madi's grandma)has an auto immune disease which makes her more prone to infections. She had an injury on her finger that got out of control quickly she was on two antibiotics for nearly a year.
Take care of yourself,
Hugs C

We are purring very hard for your mom! That is one ugly infection. Our mom ran a fever for a week when her knee got infected and she was on an antibiotic! You tell you mom to take care of herself, and Miss Shelly, we know you have "tortitude," but NO BITIES!!!!

Random Felines said...

OUCH!!! Mom has been bitten before and reacts badly enough that she goes to the doctor right away - but it can be tough with no help. Wish we were closer..... But we are glad you have gotten some help and are feeling a little better.

Miss Shelly - NO MORE biting the mom!!!

That looks bad, Judi.
My bite is different... big, swollen to about the size of a golf ball pushed under the skin of my right hand (the back part).
It is firey red and very hot to touch, and my whole hand looks flushed. You can see the bite mark where the one tooth went in and got stuck.
You need to get a doctor to look at that, and get some antibiotic shots. Is your tetanus shot up to date? I got a booster just in case, plus several antibiotic shots.
My bite is finally responding, today it is about 1/2 the size of a golf ball. Progress!!!
It didn't really start to heal until this round of antibiotics, Bactrim DS. It is working!
I'm so worried about you, keep us posted.
Love & Purrs,
Mom ML & KC & Kitties

Oh no, I am sorry. Cat bites can be very serious because they have lots of bacteria in their mouths. I have had a few severe bites, one on my thumb that overnight swelled up like a baseball bat. I had to go to the emergency room for that one. A trick I learned to help prevent infection is to soak the bite almost immediately in salt water. It draws the bacteria out of the wound and will give you some time if you can't go the vet right away.

We will be praying that the antibiotics do their thing and you feel better soon.

Oh my goodness! I know that Peanut always gives me love bites and sometimes they hurt!! It's such a coincidence that this is happening to you right now. A week ago last Sunday I picked up Ruby and her toe nail caught on my hand. It became infected I kept cleaning it with alcohol swabs and using hydrogen peroxide to draw the infection out and used neosporin ointment. Ttoday it is finally looking better. I'm glad your on antibiotics. I didn't go to the dr. but thought I was going to have to.
Watch that wound closely. We send purrs and prayers for quick healing.

Mom Judi: A lot of places have some sort of shuttle service to get people around who don't have cars. Check with your doctor, if nothing else. Maybe he(?) could suggested something.

Are there any bus routes close to you that you could use to get to the doctor or ER?

Cat bites are not to be ignored. Purrrrrss that these infections do not get any worse then they already have.

Oh that looks like it hurts! Our mom has had a number of cat bites and she learned the hard way that you don't mess with them! A cat bite is the worse bite after a human bite. She's had one too many infections. We hope your mom's gets better real soon!!

And Shelly...you can give nips...just don't break any skin, okay??

p.s. Some big churches have a ministry to help home-bound folks with appointments, etc. My church has a sister church in San Antonio called Calvary Chapel San Antonio, phone (210) 658-8337. It's just a thought, especially if it gets worse before Friday.

OMC! That really is a nasty looking infection Mom Judi has festering! The medicine will make it go away. The meds can also make her feel yucky too. The first cat bit our Mom got she had to go to the ER at 5:00 am one morning. They put her on IV antibiotics, got a tetanus shot and went home with oral antibiotics. She felt pretty crappy from the meds too. She doesn't mess around anymore. Straight to the doctor for antibiotics.

Take good care of Mom Judi! (((hugs)))

Eeek, that is quite the bite. I'm so sorry to hear that your mama isn't doing well - infections are horrible that way (I'm really prone to infection, so I understand!). I hope your mama gets better quickly and that Shelly learns to stop biting. Also, my sister is in Houston, which I don't think is too far away, so if you have any emergent issues, she might be able to help out in a pinch!

Oh wow Mom Judi we are so sorry to hear about your bite. Lots and lots of purrs and prayers going up for you and Mom ML. Cleo likes to nip our Mom too or scratch her. Mom gets really angry with her but she still does it. Mom has to run into the bathroom immediately to wash the area with soap and water and put some bactine on it so it won't swell up. Even if it's in the middle of the night. Sure hope those anti-biotics do the trick and you are all better really soon.
